Mothers are always excited when a new baby arrives whether it is their first or their fifth. You should always send her a little something to help welcome the new baby to the world and to let her know you are thinking of her.
If this is her first baby, she is probably going to need a lot of stuff. She will need diapers, wipes, lotions, soaps, clothes- you name it, she will probably need it! Lots of people will probably be getting her gifts so there is no need to get her everything, just a few items will do. If you want to make sure you get her something different from everyone else, you could call around but in most cases, she is going to need a lot of everything.
If this is a second, third, or fourth child, and so on, she might not need everything that a new mother would need. It really depends on how long it has been since she had her last child as well as whether this child is a boy and the last was a girl, etc.
If you happen to have a friend who is the mother with everything, fresh flowers will always do the trick. Anything to let her know you are thinking of her and her new arrival.
One last suggestion for new moms- it can be very overwhelming having a new baby. One of the best gifts you can give her is some time to herself. Offer to babysit while she goes shopping or even for a walk. This will give her time to regroup and alleviate some of the stress associated with a new baby.
